Programs of study eligible for TEACH Grant 

To fulfill the service obligation students must teach a high-need subject full-time.  

These fields are always designated as high-need: 

  • Mathematics 

  • Science, including computer science 

  • Foreign language 

  • Bilingual education 

  • English language acquisition 

  • Reading Specialist 

  • Special Education 

There is also a list of high-need subjects that is state specific and is updated annually. For Michigan this has included:

To meet the requirement for a high-need subject that is on the state-specific list the subject area must be on the list either: 

  1. When the student signs the Agreement to Serve or receives the TEACH Grant

  2. When the student begins teaching in that field 

If the student meets one of the two conditions, then they can complete their teaching obligation even if the subject is later removed from the list in that state. 

To be eligible for the TEACH Grant at Michigan State, the student must be in one of the following programs listed below. The onus is upon the student to determine whether they will be able to meet the subject matter requirement associated with the grant. 

Undergraduate: 

  • Mathematics-Secondary Education BS 

  • Integrated Science-Secondary Education BS 

  • Child Development: Birth to Kindergarten and Special Education BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Child Development and Early Childhood Education: Birth to Kindergarten and Special Education BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Special Education BA 

  • Spanish Education BA 

  • French Education BA 

  • German BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Japanese BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Chinese BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Arabic BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Elementary Education BA 

  • English BA with English Education Concentration 

  • History: Social Studies Education BA 

  • Comparative Cultures and Politics BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • International Relations BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Social Relations and Policy BA with Teaching Endorsement 

  • Art Education BFA 

  • Music Education BMUS

 *Students who receive the TEACH Grant as graduate students must complete four years of full-time service after the completion of the graduate degree even if they have already been teaching the subject prior to attainment of the master’s degree.
