Student Fees and Taxes
The fees and taxes below may appear on your bill.
Energy fee
The purpose of the is to address the extraordinary increases in the cost of energy and the requirements the University faces to sustain and expand the provisions of energy to meet the needs of our students and faculty. The fee isn't related to where an individual student might be physically located. Rather it's designed to address an extraordinary increase in one aspect of the overall "cost of doing business" for MSU.
Matriculation fee
A matriculation fee is charged to all degree-earning students regardless of the number of credits enrolled in. The fee includes a registration fee and infrastructure/technology fee. It provides students with email, computer hookup in the residence halls, computer enrollment capabilities, StuInfo, libraries, and the placement center, and assists with overall maintenance of the University.
FM radio tax
The FM radio tax supports two student run radio stations, "Impact 89 FM", www.impact89fm.org and WFIX "thefix.org", an internet-only station. Both stations are supported by a student voted fee collected from all students each semester. Offices and studios are located in G-4 Holden Hall. For more information call 353-4414.
Refunds may be obtained by bringing an ID and proof of registration to the station during regular business hours. If you are studying away from campus for the sememster and are requesting a refund of this fee, you may:
- fax your proof of payment and registration to (517) 355-1292, atten WDBM-FM General Manager
- email an electronic copy to GM@impact89fm.org or
- mail a copy to the station at G-4 Holden Hall, MSU, East Lansing, MI 48825
You must take action before the end of the first two weeks of a semester (or the first 10 class days).
ASMSU tax
ASMSU is the all-university undergraduate student government (Associated Students of MSU). ASMSU provides many services to students such as free legal services, funding for student programs and events, MSU yearbook and copy and faxing services. All activities and programs are funded through a student voted tax collected each semester. For questions call 517-355-8266, email asmsu@msu.edu or visit asmsu.msu.edu.
If you are requesting a refund, contact the office at the number above. You will be required to provide proof of payment and registration. You must take action before the end of the first two weeks of a semester (or the first 10 class days).
COGS tax
COGS is the all-University graduate and graduate-professional student governing body (Council of Graduate Students). Activities and services are funded through a student voted tax collected each semester. Their office is located at 313-316 Student Services, 517-353-9189 or email cogs@msu.edu or visit their website at www.msu.edu/~cogs. If you are requesting a refund, contact the office at the number above. You will be required to provide proof of payment and registration. You must take action before the end of the first two weeks of a semester (or the first 10 class days).
