The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available for 2016-2017. Here are a few tips from the Office of Financial Aid:

  • Create your FSA ID before completing the FAFSA. You can create the FSA ID at This replaced the old federal PIN number. Keep it in a safe place as you will need your FSA ID and password anytime you want to make changes to your FAFSA or file a new FAFSA in the future.
  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your income tax information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA Application. This saves time, improves accuracy, and reduces the likelihood that you will have to turn in additional documentation to verify your FAFSA information. This tool is available a few weeks after you submit your 2015 federal tax return.
  • If you don't want to wait until your taxes are filed to complete your FAFSA you can use estimated information now and then update your FAFSA once your taxes are filed.
  • Be very careful when entering your social security number on the FAFSA. Entering an incorrect number or your parent's number in the student section can cause significant delays in the financial aid process.
  • Never pay to complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA application is a free application. You can get free assistance with FAFSA questions from our office or by calling 1-800-4-FEDAID.

The application to apply for Summer 2016 aid is available in StuInfo. Summer aid is not automatically awarded to students. To apply for summer aid log into StuInfo, click 'Financial Aid' Check Your Aid, and click the "Apply for Summer Aid" button. We will begin reviewing summer aid requests mid-February. Once we have determined a student's summer financial aid eligibility we will send an email to their MSU email account (and a copy will be sent to any Guest email accounts) notifying them that they can view their aid in StuInfo.
