fafsa changes

President Obama recently announced an important change to the financial aid application process. Currently students have to wait until January 1st to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming school year. For example, to apply for financial aid for 2016-2017 students can complete the FAFSA beginning January 1st, 2016 using 2015 tax information. Many students and their families do not have their taxes completed until several months later so they fill out the FAFSA with estimated information and update the FAFSA after their taxes are filed.

Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, students will be able to complete their FAFSA as early as October 1st, 2016! They will use 2015 tax information which most students have submitted by that point. Since their taxes are completed they can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool that is offered where they can transfer their tax information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA. This reduces FAFSA errors significantly and will reduce the need to turn in additional documentation to the Office of Financial Aid. They will also have more time to plan for the upcoming school year.

We will continue to update you with more details as they are available. For more information visit
