We have mailed out paper award letters to all incoming freshman that have completed their 2015-2016 FAFSA by March 1st. We have also awarded aid to most returning students that have filed their FAFSA by March 1st. All students can view their financial aid status in StuInfo under Financial Aid (Check Your Aid).

Please keep in mind that errors, such as typing a social security number incorrectly on the FAFSA, can delay the financial aid process. If your FAFSA contains errors this will be displayed under "FAFSA Status" or "Required Documents". We also send out follow-up letters requesting documentation.

parent plus

Below are the steps in the Parent PLUS Loan application process.

Step 1: Complete a Parent PLUS Loan Application Form (LAF) using our online application.

Step 2: The application is reviewed and a credit check is processed. Please note that credit checks for fall semester are not processed until the end of May.

Step 3: If the application is approved a master promissory note (MPN) is required. The master promissory note can be completed at studentloans.gov.

Step 4: The approved loan will appear on the bill as a temporary credit. MSU will receive the loan funds 10 days prior to the start of the semester and apply it to the bill.

Step 5: Loan repayment begins after the loan if fully disbursed. This typically occurs during spring semester since only half of the loan disburses in the fall and the other half 10 days prior to spring semester.

You can defer PLUS Loan payments as long as the student is attending school at least half-time. If you are denied you can appeal the denial by contacting the number provided on the denial notification. This will come from the Department of Education. If you are denied, your student may be eligible for a PLUS Replacement loan which is typically $4,000 or $5,000 depending on their grade level. You would need to contact our office to request the PLUS Replacement Loan once you are notified of the denial.

You can monitor your Parent PLUS Loan application status in StuInfo under Financial Aid (Check Your Aid). You can also find more information about the Parent PLUS Loan at www.finaid.msu.edu/plus.asp.
