Applying for aid for medical school

<<– med home

How to apply
To apply for financial aid use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). No other application is required for most aid programs at MSU. After you have applied you can also use the FAFSA website to check the status of your application and to make corrections if necessary. If you cannot apply online you may request a paper FAFSA from MSU. Use a Department of Education PIN to sign your FAFSA electronically. This will speed up FAFSA processing time.
MSU's Federal School Code is 002290
This number is requested on the FAFSA.
Parental information
Reporting of parental data on the FAFSA is encouraged (although not mandatory) in order to be considered for all aid programs. Reporting parental data can only help you secure additional assistance; it will not hurt you.
Credit history
Your credit history is not reviewed as part of your FAFSA application. However, some students may need to borrow from funding sources that require a credit check. Poor credit may keep you from obtaining a Grad PLUS or a private alternative loan.
Correcting your application
If you use estimated tax data when you file your FAFSA, you must update your application once you have actual tax data. If you already filed your FAFSA but did not list MSU, you can call 800-433-3243 and ask that MSU be added.
Extenuating circumstances
If you have any special circumstances of which you would like us to be award (e.g. loss of employment, additional family members, etc.,), call the Office of Financial Aid for a Special Condition Application (SCA).
Deadlines
The federal deadline for filing the FAFSA is June 30 of each year for the preceding aid year. If you will not be attending summer semester, but are attending fall/spring, your deadline will be the last day of spring semester. MSU does not have a deadline other than the FAFSA deadline. However aid is awarded on a first come, first served basis until funds are exhausted. You should file as soon as possible after January 1 preceding the aid year that begins the following fall. FAFSAs filed/signed before January 1 are rejected.
Reapply every year
You must reapply each year. If a pre-filled FAFSA is available to you online be sure to update your income, asset, and household information.
The aid awarding process at MSU
After MSU receives the results of your FAFSA and you have been admitted to MSU, we award your aid based on your need (as determined by the FAFSA) and the financing we have available. Documentation such as tax returns may need to be reviewed before your aid is finalized. If we need these documents we will request them from you.
